Sound In the Ocean: Notes and Explanation
- Sound Travels as different frequencies of vibration, in a wave called a pressure-wave, or P-wave (see above). It can travel through any medium (OR FLUID), that has matter (not in a vacuum).
- The SOFAR channel is a region of far-traveling sound in the ocean where long sound wave-lengths can travel extremely long distances. Instead of the sound hitting the surface or the ocean floor and dissipating, it stays in the SOFAR channel.
- Marine organisms use sound to find possible prey/predators through echolocation, also to find mates, or just communicate to other members of their species
- People use sonar in many ways. We broadcast radio and microwave frequencies underwater and use sonar for military uses on submarines just like echolocation, we also use it to get information about the ocean's geography
